Tourism has the potential to empower people and support local development when rooted in fairness and respect. ISTO’s Working Group on Community and Fair Tourism promotes socially sustainable practices that place communities at the heart of tourism and foster fair and responsible development.
”Fair tourism is a relevant response to the challenges posed by the unprecedented growth of the international tourism sector. It is a powerful alternative, driven by small organisations that are not always part of networks and produce little consolidated economic data. Sharing experiences and bringing together community-based tourism stakeholders within ISTO is essential to advancing together and recognising the influence of this pioneering movement on the positive transformation of the tourism industry.
Coralie MartiCoordinator of the Working Group on Community and Fair Tourism
Support for local initiatives, community participation and the strengthening of community organisations are key to ensuring that tourism is a chosen activity rather than something imposed, and are the main pillars of community-based and fair tourism.
Launched in November 2024 in response to the growing interest expressed by several members at the ISTO World Congress in Costa Rica, the Working Group on Community and Fair Tourism is coordinated by Coralie Marti from the Association pour le Tourisme Équitable et Solidaire - ATES (France).
The working group regularly organises sessions for testimonials and debates on the major issues and practices of community-based and fair tourism, focusing on bringing together the complementary perspectives of professionals, network leaders, public authorities and researchers from different continents.
After each session of the Working Group, ISTO publishes a summary article on its website highlighting the key takeaways, reflections, and outcomes of the discussion. These updates help share knowledge, inspire action, and keep the wider community engaged in the ongoing conversation around community and fair tourism.
