To mark this milestone, two complementary events will be organised to highlight the legacy of the Declaration and strengthen exchanges within the international ISTO network.
To mark this major anniversary, ISTO will organise the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Declaration on 29-30 October 2026 in Montreal, Canada.
Organised by ISTO Americas in partnership with UQAM, the event will bring together the international ISTO community, its members and partners to celebrate three decades of commitment to more inclusive, equitable and accessible tourism for all.
The event will provide an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the Montreal Declaration, explore the evolution of social tourism over the past thirty years, and discuss the challenges and prospects shaping its future. It will bring together representatives of the ISTO network, researchers, social tourism stakeholders and committed partners for a day of reflection and forward-looking discussions on the challenges of more responsible and socially sustainable tourism.
The programme will include discussions based on inspiring case studies, the sharing of experiences and international best practices, as well as technical visits with members of the Quebec network. The celebration will also extend to ISTO's participation in the International Tourism and Travel Show (SITV), providing an opportunity to promote the values of social tourism to a wider audience.
The celebrations will continue in November 2026 in Bologna, Italy, where ISTO Europe, in partnership with AITR, will organise the European celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Montréal Declaration "Towards a Humanist and Social Vision of Tourism", as part of AITR Incontra - 5th Edition.
The celebration will begin on 26 November at the University of Bologna, bringing together members of the ISTO network, partners, academics and responsible tourism stakeholders to reflect on the legacy of the Montréal Declaration and its continued relevance in promoting tourism that is more inclusive, responsible and socially sustainable.
Discussions will continue on 27 November during AITR Incontra at DumBO, providing further opportunities for networking, knowledge exchange and collaboration among responsible tourism organisations and professionals.
This European celebration will build on the discussions initiated in Montréal while strengthening dialogue and cooperation between Italian, European and international stakeholders committed to advancing a fair and sustainable tourism for all.
By organising these two milestone events, ISTO aims to provide its international community with a valuable opportunity to come together, share inspiring experiences and strengthen its collective commitment to tourism that is accessible to all.
Thirty years after the adoption of the Montreal Declaration, these celebrations will reaffirm the enduring relevance of its principles and their importance in building a more responsible, inclusive and sustainable tourism sector.
