The European Committee of the Regions met between December 8th and 10th 2020 to discuss the future of tourism in the European Union. As a result, the document “Towards a more sustainable tourism for EU cities and regions” was released.

The core of the opinion is around 7 key topics: COVID-19 impacts on the tourism and transport sector, actions to make tourism more sustainable, travel means of transport, environmental impacts, social and economic impacts, digitalisation and data, and EU tourism policy.

One of the propositions made by the European Committee of the Regions is to design a new European Sustainable Tourism framework, which should be aligned with the Green Deal as well as with the UN 2030 Agenda.

According to the Committee, adequate financial resources are required to save the tourism sector and to establish a long-term European tourism policy for a sustainable quality tourism industry based on respect for the environment and the fight against climate change.
